Obituary For Kenneth L. Wheeler

Kenneth L. Wheeler, age 91, of Susanville, California, passed away on July 31, 2024, at the Lassen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Susanville, California. He was born in December 1932 to Floyd and Rose (Gstohl) Wheeler of South Dakota, where he attended school. Ken served in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and was awarded an Honorable Discharge. In September 1959, he married Catherine Mathews in Susanville, California, where they lived and raised four daughters. For 32 years, he was employed by Citizens Utilities, working as a lineman, installer repairman, supervisor, and engineer.

As a young man, Ken worked on the side as a photographer and published various images in magazines. Later in life, he began carving wooden duck decoys, some of which won awards at decoy competitions. In addition, he enjoyed tending his large organic garden and growing surplus produce for neighbors to pick up for no charge on their way home from work.

Ken was preceded in death by his father, mother, five siblings, and oldest daughter, Karen. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; three daughters, Janet, Sandra, and Susan; and grandchildren, Cole and Lewis Westwood.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 120 North Union Street, in Susanville, California. A celebration of his life will be held at the Monsignor Moran Hall immediately following Mass. Burial will take place at Susanville Cemetery on Court Street.
